What Is an ACCA Diploma?

An ACCA diploma sits within ACCA's foundation-level qualifications, sometimes referred to as Foundations in Accountancy (FIA). These qualifications are separate from the main ACCA Qualification and are aimed at learners building the accounting knowledge that supports further study or entry-level accounting roles.

The diplomas themselves are awarded by ACCA. To get an ACCA diploma in Accounting and Business, you first need to complete the specific exams as well as the Foundations in Professionalism module. We at Public Accountants provide tuition and study support toward these papers. After completion of the relevant ACCA programme requirements, the qualification itself is issued directly by ACCA, not by Public Accountants.

What ACCA Foundation-Level Diploma Study Covers

ACCA's foundation-level diploma routes cover different areas of bookkeeping, financial accounting, management accounting and business knowledge depending on the level selected.

  • Recording business transactions and documentation in an accounting system
  • Basic management information for planning and decision-making
  • Maintaining financial records and using double-entry accounting techniques
  • Preparing and presenting basic cost information
  • Financial accounting
  • Management accounting
  • Business and technology at the relevant level
  • Foundations in Professionalism as required for the applicable diploma award

Public Accountants offers online ACCA tuition for selected foundation-level papers. Contact the course team to confirm which papers are currently available before enrolling.

During the course, if you encounter a difficult topic or fall behind, you can schedule a one-to-one session with your qualified tutor. You can use this time to ask questions, clarify concepts and work through any areas you find challenging so you can get back on track with your studies.

ACCA Diploma Online Study Options

ACCA offers three main diploma routes at Foundation level, each built around a different combination of papers and broadly matched to a different starting point.

ACCA Diploma Level 2 Level 3 and Level 4 study levels

ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting – RQF Level 2

Think of this as the first step towards your ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting. In other words, this is the entry point for learners at the very beginning of their financial education, broadly matched to GCSE level. It's made up of the following components:

  • FA1 Recording Financial Transactions
  • MA1 Management Information
  • Foundations in Professionalism

FA1 focuses on recording financial transactions. It covers how business transactions and documentation are recorded in an accounting system through to the trial balance.

MA1 is based on management information. It covers providing basic management information to support planning and decision-making. If you're someone who is starting from bookkeeping fundamentals, our ACCA bookkeeping training covers related ground and may be a useful starting point.

ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting – RQF Level 3

After the completion of RQF Level 2, you'll move on to ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting – RQF Level 3. It broadly matches A Level, and this route builds on Level 2 and is made up of the following components:

  • FA2 Maintaining Financial Records
  • MA2 Managing Costs and Finance

FA2 covers the principles behind financial records and double-entry techniques, including, but not limited to preparing basic financial statements. At the same time, MA2 covers preparing and presenting cost information for planning and decision-making.

ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business – RQF Level 4

This is the final level of the ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business. It matches the higher foundation-level route, broadly matched to the Certificate of Higher Education level, made up of components such as:

  • FBT Business and Technology
  • FMA Management Accounting
  • FFA Financial Accounting

A point worth mentioning is that these three diplomas are not interchangeable. Each is built around different papers and matched to a different starting level. So, if you're wondering which one to start with, it will depend on your existing knowledge and qualification.

Which ACCA Diploma Course Level Is Right for You?

ACCA Diploma Components General Starting Context
RQF Level 2: FA1 + MA1 + Foundations in Professionalism Foundation or starting level for beginners
RQF Level 3: FA2 + MA2 The next stage for beginners or the first stage for those with basic knowledge in accounting
RQF Level 4: FBT + FMA + FFA Advanced stage, broadly aligned with higher education

ACCA Recommendation for the Different Levels

ACCA advises learners with no previous accounting knowledge or experience to begin at Level 2 rather than moving directly to Level 4. This is general guidance rather than personalised advice. Your own starting point will depend on your background and existing knowledge in accounting.

What Will You Study at Each ACCA Diploma Online Level?

Our online ACCA diploma course covers the following:

1. Bookkeeping and Financial Records

FA1 and FA2 cover how transactions are recorded and how financial records are maintained. They cover the essentials from basic transaction recording through to double-entry techniques and preparing basic financial statements.

2. Management Accounting

Management Accounting 1, Management Accounting 2 and Financial Management Accounting cover how organisations use financial and cost information to support planning and decision-making. Starting from basic management information at Level 2 through to fuller management accounting at Level 4.

3. Financial Accounting

FFA covers financial accounting at Level 4. FFA focuses on building on the recording and record-keeping knowledge introduced at the earlier levels.

4. Business and Technology

FBT covers the business and technology knowledge that sits alongside financial and management accounting at Level 4.

What Is Foundations in Professionalism?

Foundations in Professionalism is a module required as part of the RQF Level 2 diploma award. You only need to complete it once, even if you go on to complete more than one foundation-level qualification.

Here is a point worth noting: Public Accountants does not award, assess or control this module. ACCA is the governing and administrative body that sets the questions and issues all diploma certificates.

Can You Study an ACCA Diploma Online?

Tutor and student studying ACCA online

This depends on two separate things: the ACCA qualification requirements and the tuition provider you study with.

ACCA sets the papers, exams and Foundations in Professionalism requirement for each diploma regardless of who provides your tuition.

For tuition, Public Accountants offers online ACCA study support including the following:

  • Tutor-led online classes
  • Recorded sessions
  • Study materials
  • Tutor support
  • Assessments
  • Mock exams

ACCA Diploma Online for Beginners

If you have no prior accounting background, starting at the foundation level gives you a way to build knowledge gradually rather than beginning with more advanced material. This means working through the appropriate entry point for your existing knowledge, then progressing as your understanding develops, with the flexibility of online study throughout.

If you're weighing up where to start, our ACCA beginner course is built for learners with no prior knowledge. This course covers the groundwork many students use before moving into foundation-level diploma study.

ACCA Diploma vs ACCA Qualification: Key Differences to Know

ACCA Diploma ACCA Qualification
Foundation-level award Full professional qualification route
Covers specified foundation-level components Progresses through the broader ACCA qualification structure
Useful as an entry or progression route Leads toward ACCA membership after clearing all levels

An ACCA diploma is a foundation-level award, not the full ACCA qualification. So learners who complete one do not become a chartered certified accountant.

Progressing After an Online ACCA Diploma

Completing a foundation-level diploma can support progression into further ACCA study, depending on which papers and components you've completed and ACCA's own requirements at the time. This is not an automatic entry. The appropriate next step depends on both your individual diploma route and ACCA's current progression rules.

ACCA's published guidance sets out a specific progression route for students who complete the ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business (RQF Level 4). Upon successful completion of the Level 4 Diploma papers, namely FBT, FMA and FFA, plus Foundations in Professionalism, students are transferred to the Applied Skills level of the ACCA Qualification, with exemption from all three Applied Knowledge papers (Business and Technology, Management Accounting and Financial Accounting), unless informed otherwise.

This means the Level 4 Diploma route can act as a genuine step toward the ACCA qualification, rather than a separate track that needs to be repeated. The Level 2 and Level 3 diplomas sit earlier in this same structure, building the papers and knowledge that lead toward Level 4 and, in turn, toward this progression route.

Exemption and progression rules are set and administered by ACCA and can be reviewed or updated by ACCA at any time, so the current position should always be checked directly with ACCA or with the course team before you rely on it as part of your study plan.

If you're ready to look at the next stage, our ACCA tuition online covers study support across the ACCA Qualification, and our full ACCA courses page gives you an overview of every route we support.
